I'll never truly know whether my love for each new season of Marc by Marc is at least in part due to a deep bias. If you've read this blog at all, you should know by now that Marc is my main man. The art he created changed me, and that's a fact. His original eponymous line is legendary, and always will be. However, his diffusion line is what really resonates with me on a more personal, wearable level. The girl I aspire to be always has a little Marc by Marc in her.

One of my favorite aspects of the brand is that no matter what the fabric, cut or design is, it always comes out looking new and sought-after. Nautical stripes are certainly not a new concept, but they were prevalent in this collection and were presented in a way that made me fall in love with them all over again.

Say hello to spring's answer to fall's camel coat rage, and there are no words for the straw cross-body bags with neon detailing. I'm crossing my fingers for a price tag below $300 on the bag.

Floppy, oversized bows at the ankle have been done on a viral level with Pierre Hardy x Gap, but these shoes take that idea to a luxurious level of aesthetic joy.

In the words of Mrs. Zoe, I die for this blood red / orange color. I wish I could tell from the pictures what fabric the dress and shirt are made out of. The high-waisted shorts remind me of a pair of navy Marc by Marc shorts I have, so needless to say I covet these as well.

More great bags, a fresh collarless military jacket, and the classiest pair of hot pants I've ever seen.

Another season, another job well done. I salute you, Mr. Jacobs.

The platform shoes worn at Derek Lam's S/S '11 runway show were everything I've been dreaming of and more. I follow a fairly strict all-wedge, no-stiletto footwear rule. I measure out at 5'1"on a good day, so naturally, I love myself a tall wedge. They make me feel as though I have more presence in a room. I'm sure you can relate. The only drawback to a platform wedge is that, while infinitely more comfortable than a stiletto, it still takes a toll on your delicate arch.

Enter Derek Lam's flat platform! Thanks Derek, I hope you can forgive me for shamelessly stalking Jeffrey Campbell's website for a $200 version around February of next year. I'd surely buy your design instead, if I weren't counting my pennies to make it through my four-year degree.

Lam also presented great business casual outfits for the fash pack. This olive green dress has "It's the first day of my internship at Vogue, and I know what's up" written all over it.

Also to be noted were the knee-high wrap sandals which took the seemingly simple outfits they were paired with to another level. The calf-length beaded skirt ensemble reminds me of something Alexander Wang's muse's fifty-three year old hip, yet classy aunt might wear on any given day.

The versatile double belts shown added the perfect amount of structure to the flowing fabrics Lam used for dresses and skirts. They were proven to work for both night and day. Also, can we talk about the silver maxi dress? The goddess Athena meets downtown hipster. I can't imagine a better combination.

3. The Cut actually got it wrong. I did not make this skirt, my friend Chloe did out of her ex-boyfriend's shirt. She gave it to me because it's super short and she's super tall. In this case, I'm thankful to be short!

The overwhelming majority of you requested seeing more outfit posts, so here is my first attempt at filling your requests! I can't promise that it will be an everyday occurrence, but I can promise that I will try to snap more like these.
It was definitely SUMMER out today, so I had to wear something super breezy and light. I got this tank top at Old Navy for like $1.31 or something insanely cheap like that, but it's a large, so it's always been hard to wear. Finally found a use for it! I chopped it to a crop top. It's perfect, and I love it. This skirt is even more shiny and magical in real life, take my word for it. It's one of my best thrift finds of all time.

So the truth is I got this BleachBlack x Urban Outfitters ring about a month ago! I just haven't gotten around to photographing it yet. My excuse is that it came in the mail in the middle of finals week. So yep, here it is! I wear it on my "engagement" finger so it often gets mistaken for something that it's not. I think I might have given my boyfriend's mom a mini heart attack when she first saw it. Otherwise, I don't care if anyone thinks I'm married. Hah, this is Utah. People get married at 19 all the time. (Don't get too excited, I'm NOT a typical Utahn!)

I don't think I've ever blogged about how much I LOVE the public library. There is hours and hours of entertainment available there for FREEEEEEE! As a college student, free is your best friend. I have a goal of reading the entire list of 2009 ALA Best Books for Young Adults. I probably won't finish it until 2013, but THAT'S NOT THE POINT! I WILL finish it eventually! These three books are on the list. No spoilers if you've already read them please!

WHAT?! THERE'S A HUGE CHUNK OF FLESH MISSING FROM MY CHEEK?! Wait, it's all right, that's just my obnoxiously prominent dimple. They're usually not this dramatic but I guess that's what happens when I only kind of smile? The point of this photo is to show you guys my new haircut. That's right, I'm riding on the Kate Lanphear bandwagon. My hair isn't clipped back, that's really how short it is on the one side. It's a huge change considering that my hair looked like this less than a year ago, but I love it for summer. It's very low-maintenance.

I recently came across a blog called .sabo skirt. It's run by two incredibly stylish friends from Australia, Thessy & Yiota. Keep your eye on them, they're fairly new to the blogosphere but I have a feeling their blog won't be a secret for very long!

Thessy & Yiota were nice enough to answer a few questions for me, so read ahead to get to know them and their style better!

How and when did you first become interested in fashion?

Thessy: My mother started my love affair with dresses from a very young age. I would always enjoy walking around in her far-too-big heels, throwing on her pearl necklaces and wearing her clip on ear rings. I looked totally ridiculous but I thought I looked fabulous, and I guess my interest in fashion never faded away.

Yiota: I am definitely the opposite to Thess. I was a late bloomer. I only started becoming more conscious of what I was wearing in my late teens! But now, I am hooked.. in love.

How do you know each other, and why did you decide to start a blog together?

Thessy: People ask us that all the time! I think we will keep that a secret just a tad longer, a little mystery never hurt anyone! The truth is, we started .sabo skirt. together because we both have a VERY unhealthy shopping addiction and this blog is a way for us to feel like we are shopping for a purpose and not just shopping for the hell of it. We didn’t realize that it would be so successful, and well, now we just have to buy all the latest trends even if we didn’t want to =)

Yiota: Hahaha. Wow..I couldn't have put it better myself.

If you could only wear pieces from one person's closet for the rest of your life, who would you choose?

Thessy: I would choose the Olsen’s twins closet for two reasons. 1 – Their style is to die for and they always look magnificent whenever they leave the house. And 2 – they are twins! Their joint wardrobe would be absolutely massive!

Yiota: ERIN WASSON! I'm just so in love with her style.. it looks so effortless and chic at the same time.

What is your LEAST favorite major trend?

Thessy: Definitely real fur coats. It is so cruel… people kill animals for such a selfish reason. I know it looks and feels a million dollars but it isn’t worth murdering an innocent animal.

Yiota: I'd have to say it is the 'leggings as the new pants'. Although I absolutely love all types of leggings, I can't handle seeing girls showing their behinds (underwear lines and all) when they're wearing leggings!! An oversized top/something that covers your behind must ALWAYS be worn with leggings, unless they are in fact pants. That is my rule anyway.

If you could attend fashion week in only one city, where would it be and why?

Thessy: I personally would love to go to New York fashion week. The US always does it bigger and better, plus they are the first city on the calendar to hold fashion week, followed by London, Milan and Paris. I would love to be one of the first to know what the designers consider what’s in and what’s out for the season.

Yiota: I would LOVE to go Paris for fashion week. There are so many fashion trends and unique ideas that get started in Paris..not to mention the amazing street style that EVERYONE seems to posses there (and the accents =D)

I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar De La Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of 8 different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic casual corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.

Ever since I read The Green Book by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas M. Kostigen, I've been extremely aware of the size of my carbon footprint. So when I found out about ecosystem, a brand that makes journals out of 100% post-consumer recycled material, I was so excited! Being "green" has become somewhat of a trend lately, but some old school people still like to call us "hippies," or "granola." Well, ecosystem has successfully blown that stereotype out of the water. Their journals come in bright colors like watermelon, lagoon, clementine and kiwi. They say it perfectly on their website: "Being green doesn't have to be brown." With the quality and versatility of this product, you really have no excuse to still be using your regular, old notebook!

You COULD read The One Hundred by Nina Garcia, or Style A to Zoe by Rachel Zoe of course...but since you're already here, you should just continue reading this post. I've compiled every thing I think is essential to a woman's wardrobe. No matter what your style is! I've given specific examples, but they can all be interchanged for different products to fit your own personal style. Plus, all of these items can last you years and will work with any current trends.

1. Oversized Tee or Tank Top

Everyone has days where they need something comfortable and easy that they can throw on with no thought process involved. Most of us also want to look good without thinking. There is no easier way to look chic and completely no fuss at the same time than with an oversized tee or tank with an excellent cut. Throw on skinny jeans and a statement necklace and bam, you've got it.

My Recommendation: T by Alexander Wang Classic Tank with Pocket

2. Black Ballet Flats

These literally can go with any outfit. I'M SERIOUS, PEOPLE. If you don't already have one pair of black flats, you need to get yourself on the hunt, ASAP. They will go with 90% of the outfits you come up with and can be thrown in your bag for back-ups in case you can't handle those heels any longer. Invest in a pair that won't wear out, because you'll be using these a lot.

3. Pea Coat

Unless you live in a place where it's tropical year-round, you need a coat. A pea coat in a neutral, dark color like black or navy is, in my opinion, your best option. A structured, classic piece like this takes a so-so outfit and makes it look instantly put together. Not to mention, it's functional because it keeps you warm!

4. Confidence Boosting Dress

Every woman should have at least one dress in her closet that makes her feel ten times prettier than normal whenever she puts it on. It could be due to how well it fits you, how comfortable it is, how beautiful the design is, how unique it is, etc. Whatever "it" is for you, find it, purchase it and wear it when you need something special!

My Recommendation: Whitney Eve Strapless Bow Dress

5. Close to Insane Heel or Wedge

Make sure it's close to insane, and not actually at insanity! You don't want to spend money on a shoe you can't even stand in, let alone walk in. They don't have to be the most comfortable shoes ever, but they have to be realistic. For some people, that's a six inch heel. For others, the only thing reasonable is three inches. Go as high as you can handle. Reserve these for times when you won't be running around, and if you struggle with heels, go for a wedge. (Personally, I can't wear heels, so I do wedges.) The way they make you look will totally be worth a little pain...I promise!

6. The Perfect Pair of Jeans

The range on this one is so broad, I can't even think of all the options! Your favorite could be a black skinny jean, light blue boyfriend jeans, thrifted acid wash jeans from the 80s, the list could go on forever. I think everyone should have at least one pair of jeans that fits their body perfectly. Get them tailored to fit you, it's beyond worth it.

My Recommendation: Rich & Skinny 'Low Down' Skinny Stretch Jeans

7. Extremely Comfortable Cardigan

Cardigans are perfect for every season...except maybe not mid-July when you can't wear anything more than a swimsuit. Every other time, however, they work! They are ideal for throwing on in the spring and fall when it's Not-Quite-Coat weather, and they're even great for lounging about the house on lazy Sundays. In the winter they are excellent layering pieces. So there you go, they're a necessity!

My Recommendation: Aubin & Wills Lytham Cashmere and Wool Cardigan

8. The Carry Everything You Own Bag

If you're anything like me, on any given day you might need to bring your laptop, your DSLR camera, a book, your wallet, and a million little things in your bag all at once. You're going to need a sturdy, well-made bag that can fit all of this. Go for neutral colors and classic designs so that you'll love it just as much in ten years as you do today.

My Recommendation: Maison Martin Margiela Embossed Suede Tote

9. The PMILK Bag

PMILK = Phone, Money, ID, Lipgloss and Keys. You need a small bag for those times when you're only carrying the basics. Unless you're a bag person, and love collecting a ton of different bags, you can get away with having only two: the carry-all from #8, and the PMILK. That way, you can feel better spending a good chunk of change on both of these knowing that their cost-per-use is actually quite low.

10. Heavy Duty Boots

If you live in Northern Utah or the equivalent, boots are mandatory in the winter. Along with three layers, a heavy coat, socks, a hat, gloves...etc. Ha, but you can still get use out of these in less frigid areas. They can obviously go with jeans or leggings, but you can also grunge up a floral dress with them in the spring.

My Recommendation: Frye Harness 12R

i know a lot of you are already in on the secret, but in case you aren't...

we love colors is hands down the best place to get every type of tight, legging, thigh high, etc. you could ever want or need! when you go to their website, it's obvious that their selection and variety is outstanding. and when i got these in the mail and tried them on, i realized the quality was also outstanding. i really don't think i could rip these unless i took a pair of scissors to them. i've already recommended them to friends, and i would recommend them to all of my readers as well!

p.s. they also sent me another pair of tights that will debut on the blog later.

hint: they'll be my way of channeling proenza schouler s/s 10!!

i bought this marc by marc bag as a graduation/birthday gift to myself.

i wanted to get something that would go with any outfit, and something that would be timeless. i firmly believe i'll still have this in my bag arsenal when i'm 65.

i received what i consider an early christmas present in the mail from one of my readers, but i wanted to wait until i got my D40 to show you guys!

amanda lalique, from mandalyzing sent me some marc by marc jacobs nail polish!

i was so stoked when it arrived in the mail, and i couldn't wait to test it out.

i wanted to show you guys the color on my nails, so i will also show you some of my rings! all of them are from special places, so they're some of my favorite pieces of jewelry.

the huge circle turquoise one was a christmas gift from my mom, she got it in greece!

i got the rolling stones ring from red light vintage in seattle, which i highly recommend if you're in the area!

i bought the oval one from a completely random boutique off the side of the road in texas while on a soccer trip. we stopped to eat, and i found this little gem.

the plain silver one is a friendship ring that my friend courtney got for me when we were at the pike place fish market - she has a matching one!

also, how great is the nail polish?! i love how it has an element of gray in it.

If it were not for the internet...I don't think I would ever even know who Marc Jacobs was, or what he did. Growing up in a small town in Utah, and moving away to an even more isolated Utah town for college, I've always looked at places like New York, L.A., etc. and hated where I lived. I still want to move out of the state, but lately it seems like more and more fashion-related things are coming from Utah.

Ali Stephens and Heidi Mount are both from here - Heidi went to the same high school as me, in fact. They are some of the industry's best.

Then of course there is the Daria editorial shot by Demarchelier in southern Utah. It looks GORGEOUS, and has been blowing up on everyone's blogs.

Then there is the brand RosenMunns that was featured in Nylon. The designers behind it (Sydney Rose and Ashley Munns) were both graduates of Brigham Young University, which is in Utah.

I love reader questions and comments.

My friend, and loyal reader (ha!) Cody, e-mailed me a link to Audrey Kitching's blog, where she talks about male models & male fashion in general becoming uber feminine, and he asked me what my take on it was.

I know this is so cliche, but beauty truly IS in the eye of the beholder! You know I'm not afraid to tell you guys what I think is truth, but there are so many different minds out there with different, valid opinions. That being said...

There are so many designers that I respect and am in awe of, and the majority of those designers send thin male models with feminine bone structure down their runways, in clothing that could look equally great on a woman.

I think men (models or not) with feminine characteristics and features are beautiful. Keep in mind there is a BIG difference between a man who literally does look like a woman, and a man who clearly IS a man, yet has those subtle feminine undertones.

As far as clothing goes, the crossroads between masculine and feminine has been a common theme in fashion design as far back as anyone in recent generations can remember. Cardigans and deep v-necks are two of the best pieces a man can choose to dress himself in. BUT, they only look good if they were designed for a man in the first place. A guy trying to pull off a pink v-neck with a female cut, is definitely not the same thing as a guy wearing a slouchy grey cardigan that fits him.

The moral of the story is, men who have style with feminine aspects know what they're doing. It's not a style that's easy to pull together, and you need to be confident and secure.

Unfortunately, the majority of people are not that way. That's why it's rare when someone (girls included) has such unique, great style. Most men and women are afraid of what others think, so they continue shopping at American Eagle for graphic tee's, because it's safe. I applaud those designers that are pushing the envelope and making the line between male and female clothing more and more gray on a daily basis.

after daul died, one of my favorite bloggers, lulu of lulu and your mom posted something that made me think:

"most fashion blogs/ people/ personalities just seem so boring. "Be a real person!" I would say. Do you ever wonder if anyone feels anything beyond "Oh I covet this..."?"

how true is this?

when i wrote my 1298347 paragraph post about body image & the fashion industry, i thought, "nobody is actually going to read this, they'll just look at the pictures of gemma and move on." while some people DID do this, others commented with legit insight in full paragraphs.

then i started to think, my favorite blogs aren't the ones who were the FIRST to post that brand new editorial that makes us all "DIIIIIEEE," it's the blogs that have CHARACTER.

blogs like style rookie, white lightning, and hard liquor & soft holes all have me laughing every time i read one of their posts. they have perspective.
